The future is almost now!

Last year, the library webpage moved its home to the town websiteVoluntown Library  and has built its web presence in Facebook .

Now the library is pleased to present a web accessible catalog for our patrons. Watch this space because in the very near future as you will be able to see what you have checked out, and find books on the shelves at Voluntown Library. Right now you can see what the library owns. Voluntown Library

This past year I have been so busy with posting on the library’s page on facebook, and building the new site at Voluntown.gov, that I have badly neglected the library’s blog page. We have recently revamped the library’s circulation area with a  “new” desk (courtesy of Bridgeport Public Library), and a new storage unit for staff use. Then on the emergency end, the library had to close a few days in January due to a lack of heat, and most recently our newly installed main doors were damaged by the wind, and cannot be used at the moment, and the library basement flooded. Now, on to the events that are of interest to you…

Sign up for Summer Reading begins Thursday June 18 @ Voluntown Public Library. Remember, the library will have activities for all ages, and looks to be an inspiring, inventive, and unique summer with the theme. Look for  programs, author visits, crafts, reading fun, music, and more at Voluntown Public Library. Readers, and their younger siblings are invited to take part.

Reading is essential for children to retain what they have learned from school over vacation. Without fun reading through the summer, learning can leak away making it harder to get back on target when school resumes.

This does not need to be dull and dreary. Let your child choose books that stimulate their interest, even if it is not at their grade level. This is summer afterall. Let them have fun. Encourage them to try to be creative and teach themselves something new – such as cartooning, cooking, gardening or even telling jokes. Perhaps they can explore the myriad of new nonfiction books to explore the lives of artists, presidents, and many others. Even if your child prefers a comic book or a graphic novel, let them read it. They ARE reading, and that is what counts as keeping the learning leak from occuring.

Since the theme is to be creative, check out the huge collection of crafting, and art books for all ages. Take the time to show your child a creative skill that you learned as a child from a grandparent or someone else. You will find that it will reinspire you and fill you with satisfaction at passing creative knowledge to your children. And don’t forget, let them catch YOU reading.
